North Carolina Malpractice Premiums for Full Time Employed Registered Nurses
In 2011 the state of North Carolina passed tort reform that should help contain insurance premiums in the state. NC allows claims to be brought up to three years after the injury or with one year after discovery (but not more than four years after the injury). Claims for retained foreign objects can be brought within one year of discovery up to ten years after the occurrence. Children have until their tenth birthday to bring suit and a patients insanity tolls the limit until they are deemed fit.
North Carolina allows joint and several liability so nurses should be aware of the insurance protection their employers and contracted partners have in place.
